DSL vs Cable
- what is the difference between these two high-speed Internet
technologies?
These two technologies offer much more than the traditional
dial-up access ever could. Their broadband access to information
dramatically increases the speed of all their transmissions and
has made the use of online multimedia much more enjoyable. In
order to make a fair DSL vs cable comparison, we must consider
several key areas in these two technologies. When pitting DSL vs
cable, we must evaluate reliability, availability, speed and the
cost of the service.
If we match DSL vs cable in the speed battle, the
theoretical winner would be cable Internet. However, cable-users
have to deal with shared bandwidth, meaning that the speed of
their connection is dependent on the number of users on the
system at any given time. On average, both technologies end up
having similar speeds.
In terms of convenience in the DSL vs cable analysis, cable
might be slightly more convenient because Internet users can use
the same provider that sets up their TV service. DSL users must
find an alternative provider.
How about security as the main concern in DSL vs cable use?
The Digital Subscriber Line is supposed to be more secure
because all cable users belong to a local area network (LAN)
where information is stored in a shared environment. If file
sharing is enabled, your neighbors could download your files!
In the DSL vs cable debate, both emerge as winners.
