Internet Access
How important is your Internet access?
Report shows that workers like it as much as
coffee.
Websense, a company that produces employee
Internet management software, released the results of its annual
Web@Work survey on Wednesday. The survey, which was completed by
Harris Interactive, shows some interesting information on
employee computer habits. 500 full-time employees from companies
that employ a minimum of 100 people were asked a variety of
questions by telephone, and 350 I.T. managers were asked other
questions about how they think workers at their companies use
their computers.
The results of the survey are pretty interesting:
-
49% of employees said they would rather have
access to the Internet for personal use than access to coffee.
-
17% of employees use instant messaging programs
at work, and only one-third of companies condone IM usage at
work.
-
21% of employees admitted to using streaming
video or audio at work, but only 6% said that they have saved
files to their work computer.
-
News sites are the websites accessed the most
at work (84%), with travel sites (64%), personal e-mail (56%),
shopping (55%), and online banking (53%) following behind.
-
The average amount of time employees said that
they spend surfing the Internet for personal reasons at work
is 2 hours per week, but the I.T. managers surveyed averaged
employees' personal Web surfing at 6 hours per week.
The survey also showed some interesting numbers
on pornography viewing and P2P downloading at work. |
