Bandwidth.com Finds a Lucrative Niche in
Delivering High-Speed Telecom Services
One of the true emerging success stories from the
“dot com” boom in the Triangle is Bandwidth.com.
The Cary-based firm, which was launched in 1999
and survived the telecom and dot com meltdowns, looks to
generate $4.5 million in revenue this year.
Why? The United States has a voracious demand for
high-speed bandwidth connectivity, and Bandwidth.com has the
means to set up clients with those services more quickly and
less expensively than other firms – including the telecom
companies.
“Bandwidth.com is the internet’s leading
distributor of DSL, Cable, Wireless and Business internet
connectivity,” company president David Morken says. “We
intermediate online transactions for internet connectivity much
like Expedia or LendingTree do for travel and mortgage
financing.”
The company is already profitable but is seeking
to raise an A round of financing to fund further growth.
Bandwidth.com does not provide the DSL or cable
or other services. Rather, it uses a proprietary database that
includes pricing and other facts that help customers shop for
the best deals. “(W)e provide complete internet service
availability, pricing, and plan details with the ability to
transact online from AT&T, Sprint, MCI, Qwest, SBC, Comcast,
Time Warner and a host of other providers,” Morken explains,
“saving customers time and providing them with instant price and
feature transparency.”
Morken says the company is seeking patent
protection for its applications.
