Scientific-Atlanta Adds Voice over IP Launch
Program to Wide Range of SciCare Broadband Services for
Cable Operators.
Following the successful launch of more than 200
digital cable systems serving millions of North American
subscribers, Scientific-Atlanta's SciCare(TM) Broadband Services
has developed a new program to provide comprehensive
capabilities for cable operators who desire to launch Voice over
IP (VoIP) service. By delivering a
proven, repeatable deployment process SciCare Broadband Services
can assist cable operators in areas that are critical to a
successful VoIP rollout -- speed to market, quality of voice
service and infrastructure assessment – by providing the
essential, VoIP-knowledgeable personnel to deliver a
comprehensive, end-to-end set of services and solutions.
"As the business model and technology prove
themselves, we think the competitiveness of the emerging voice
service marketplace will make speed to market for VoIP
applications a critical factor for cable operators," said Rob
Polak, SciCare director of service operations at
Scientific-Atlanta. "With the limited availability of people who
have the technical understanding of VoIP deployment in HFC
networks, cable operators need a resource to fill that void and
that's where we can join with them to provide this vital
component to help them have a successful launch of voice
services."
The complete range of VoIP solutions in the
Scientific-Atlanta program include:
- Project Planning -- Business process and
network consulting, VoIP service implementation process
review, site evaluation and survey, and project planning
workshop
- Assessment Services -- Includes assessments
of data network, voice network, security, HFC network,
facilities and OSS integration
- Design Services -- Complete documentation of
each location, element modifications
needed and remote site connectivity design
- Staging Services -- Network elements can be
collected at SciCare labs for system
assembly, "rack and stack," burn in and preliminary parameter
configuration
- Solution Implementation -- Integrated,
configured systems installed at
customer locations, solution and element testing, on-site
support, and issue management and resolution
- Training Services -- Comprehensive curriculum
designed for multiple levels of
cable operator personnel; includes VoIP techniques,
protocols, element configuration and practical
applications, plus detailed
engineering concepts
- Post-Install Support -- Centralized issue
management through troubleshooting
and resolution with third-party vendors to release
operators from post-install support burden
An example of the thoroughness of the
Scientific-Atlanta SciCare Broadband Services solution is the
breadth of the assessment services that delve into a wide range
of the cable system operations. In addition to the analysis of
the data and voice networks, this phase will include a security
audit for internal and external attack vulnerability, an
extensive look at the HFC plant to determine if it is ready to
support voice service, evaluations of facilities for proper HVAC
capabilities, and in-depth research on the myriad back office
functions and how supporting VoIP services will impact them.
"We are constantly seeking ways to assist cable
operators to launch and operate new services efficiently," added
Polak. "Our background in helping to create much of the HFC
infrastructure already in place means we're ready to deliver a
network that performs, now."
