Satellite Internet for Ships at Sea
Stratos Network Research of St.
John's, Newfoundland, has been awarded a federal contract in
partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to
design and develop software that would
give ships and other mobile users
complete access to the Internet and other data communications.
The project will cost a total of $836,440 to be shared equally
between Stratos and the Canadian Space Agency under the
International Mobile Satellite
Communications Program.
Satellites are being used increasingly to provide ships with
more reliable access to the Internet
than is currently available using
conventional land-based transmission systems. This is
particularly important in light of the
growing number of e-mail applications for
international shipping.
The Stratos project is to develop software that would provide a
totally seamless interconnection between ground-based and
satellite Internet systems to the
point where ships and other end-users
wouldn't notice the difference between the two types of e-mail
transmission.
Stratos expects its technologies will open significant
international markets in international
shipping and other mobile applications by
making satellite Internet access more reliable and
affordable.
Stratos Network Research is a leading Canadian company in the
design, development and integration of
mobile data networks, providing
satellite communications services to marine traffic around the
world.
